California reveals plan to become ‘sanctuary’ for abortions if Roe is overturned

.

California clinics and politicians unveiled a plan for the state to become a “sanctuary” for those seeking abortions.

Revealed by the California Future of Abortion Council on Wednesday, the plan lists 45 recommendations for the state to consider if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade next year, the Associated Press reported. The plan lists the possibility for providing funding for lodging and travel for people from other states seeking abortions.

“We’ll be a sanctuary,” Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom and founder of the council told the news outlet. “We are looking at ways to support that inevitability and looking at ways to expand our protections.”

ABORTION POLLING IS BAD NEWS FOR DEMOCRATS

Newsom said details in the report from his council will be found in his budget proposal in January 2022.

The Supreme Court heard arguments Dec. 1 in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case, which focuses on Mississippi’s law preventing most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. A ruling, expected in the spring, could undermine the 1973 decision that enshrined abortion access as a constitutional right,

More than two dozen states are prepared to ban abortions if Roe is overturned next year. In California, opponents of abortion in the state are gearing up for the fight to convince women not to get the procedure.

“Even if we are not facing any immediate legislative opportunities or legislative victories, it’s a reminder that the work of changing hearts and minds and also providing real support and resources to women facing unplanned pregnancies — that work will always continue,” said Jonathan Keller, CEO and president of the California Family Council.

Keller said the work opposing abortion would “be even more important” both after a ruling from the Supreme Court and seeing how Sacramento responds.
