Joe Biden will order the federal government to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The president will sign an executive order Wednesday outlining a list of carbon-neutral requirements for government agencies and ordering each agency head to put forward proposals to comply with those requirements.
“It is therefore the policy of my Administration for the Federal Government to lead by example in order to achieve a carbon pollution-free electricity sector by 2035 and net-zero emissions economy-wide by no later than 2050,” the executive order says.

The directive calls for the federal government to establish a carbon-free electricity sector by 2030 and to purchase only zero-emission vehicles by 2035. The government must also cut carbon emissions from federal buildings in half by 2032 and get to zero by 2045.
The order notably allows for exemptions for numerous types of equipment associated with the military and spaceflight vehicles and extends exemptions for instances related to national security and protecting intelligence sources and methods from unauthorized disclosure.

The White House has participated in several high-profile initiatives to combat climate change. Biden attended the United Nations COP26 conference last month and called climate change an “existential threat.” While attending the conference, Biden moved to place more restrictions on methane.
He also signed a bipartisan infrastructure bill on Nov. 16 that included over $100 billion in funding for climate-related investments.
