Holby City spoilers for Christmas episode

It's the last Holby City episode of the year next week, and there's plenty of drama lined up to mark the occasion.

Full of festive spirit, Ange pops the question to Josh, while Kyle makes a Christmas blunder. Meanwhile, Amelia and Eli get devastating news and a familiar face is back in Holby...

1. Amelia and Eli receive devastating news

Amelia is still on cloud nine following her miracle pregnancy news and has arranged an early Christmas present for Eli – a scan.

Amelia and Eli are excited to get the first glimpse of their unborn child, but their world comes crashing down around them when the sonographer is unable to find a heartbeat.

The couple deal with the tragedy in very different ways, with Eli keen to get his wife back on the trail she was forced to opt-out of. Amelia, meanwhile, begins to question her faith after everything she's been through – but can Eli encourage her to keep looking to the future?

2. Ollie vows to stick to his promise

Young cancer patient Sammy is back next week, as he prepares to go under the knife on AAU.

As the team prepare for the complex, multi-stage surgery – which is one of the biggest operations they've ever done – Ollie is determined to stick to his promise to Sammy's mum and be in the operating theatre with them.

Ollie assures Hanssen that he's been working with a therapist to get his PTSD under control, but can the Holby Heroes pull together to save the young boy's life, or does tragedy await?

3. Josh supports Eli

As Eli reels from his loss, he gets some much-needed advice from his new friend Josh as the tables quickly turn.

Having spent the last few weeks supporting Josh through his bulimia relapse, Eli is grateful when Josh finds him in his hour of need and encourages him not to diminish the enormity of what he's going through.

Josh also encourages Eli to be there for Amelia as well, but what does the future hold for the couple now?

4. Kylie makes a Christmas blunder

The festive season is in full swing as the staff prepare for an evening of Christmas fun. Unfortunately, Kylie has made a mortifying Secret Santa faux pas with her gift to Louis and doesn't have much time to rectify it.

While we won't give away the more specific details, it's fair to say that Louis is very much on the same wavelength as Kylie – prompting her to drop the L bomb. How will Louis react?

5. Ange proposes to Josh

Buoyed up following her conversation with Fletch last week, Ange has a romantic plan for Josh.

After arranging to meet an oblivious Josh after work, Ange gets down on one knee in the memorial garden and asks Josh to marry him. However, she is left crestfallen by his answer…

6. Josh tells Ange the truth

Floored by Ange's proposal, Josh realises he needs to be honest with her about his bulimia recovery. He tells Ange that his therapy sessions haven't been going as well as he'd hoped, and he's struggling to get the illness under control.

Josh explains how much he wants to get better for Ange, but insists that he can't marry her until he does. But when Ange puts her heart on the line and tells Josh how much he means to her, will he change his mind?

7. Dom struggles to cope

Dom is back at work in the wake of Carole's sad death, but it quickly becomes clear that he perhaps shouldn't be.

As a grieving Dom struggles to get through the day, he finds himself lashing out at poor Jeong, whose Christmas cheer tips him over the edge.

Spotting the exchange, a worried Ange steps in to support her son, but is she what Dom needs right now?

8. Ollie makes a huge decision

In the wake of Sammy's groundbreaking surgery, Hanssen is impressed with Ollie and thinks it's time he resumed his training at Holby. Ollie, on the other hand, isn't so sure medicine is right for him after all, explaining that he thought he'd feel differently after the operation but doesn't.

Ollie then drops a bombshell that leaves both Hanssen and Russ reeling, but what is it?

9. There's another return!

They're coming in thick and fast but there's another exciting character comeback in next week's episode.

This one is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, but don't worry, as the person in question will be featuring heavily when Holby returns (briefly) to screens in the New Year.
