The NYPD recently provided information from its recently formed “Hate Crime Review Panel” that shows reported hate crimes are up drastically in 2021 as compared to 2020.
According to the NYPD, as of Dec. 5, there have been 503 hate crimes reported this year, up 100% since last year. The largest jump was seen in anti-Asian crime, with significant increases also seen with anti-Semitic and homophobic crimes.
Leaders from the Jewish, Muslim, Black, Asian, and LGBTQ communities from across the city help make up this panel that was created earlier this year, with the goal being focused on having an independent look at how the NYPD handles and investigates hate crimes. They have reviewed over 100 crimes and found that most of the time they agree with how the police department handled the case.
