These Are the Most-Wanted Tech Gifts in 2021

Everyone knows the PS5 and Switch are desirable, but there are some surprises, too.

Have you taken a good, long look at your holiday shopping list? It probably has more tech items on it than you might have realized. AT&T Experts said tech gifts are topping searches this year. They went a step further in a study and looked at the top shopping searches in each state

Gaming is a major theme. The Sony PlayStation 5 is the most sought-after buy in 15 states, but unless Santa himself intervenes, it won’t be under many Christmas trees—it’s spent several seasons being perpetually sold out. Those who want the new OLED Nintendo Switch (a top item in seven states) will also run into trouble, since it’s not widely available. (If the Switch is an item on your list, whether for yourself or someone else, PCMag has some suggestions for cases for it if you luck out.)

Apple products are always popular, and that hasn’t changed this year: AirPods are trending in five states and iPads in seven.

Since it’s a season of feasts, cooking gadgets can be put to good use instantly. That may be the thinking behind the Instant Pot, still a hot item in Idaho and New Hampshire.

At PCMag we’re not too surprised that tech gifts are trending, since we’ve been working away writing up guides for everyone on your list. Those include ones for pricey gifts, not at all pricey gifts, fitness gifts, gifts for women and men, and gifts for when the supply chain won’t deliver

About Chandra Steele

Senior Features Writer

My title is Senior Features Writer, which is a license to write about absolutely anything if I can connect it to technology (I can). I’ve been at PCMag since 2011 and have covered the surveillance state, vaccination cards, ghost guns, voting, ISIS, art, fashion, film, design, gender bias, and more. You might have seen me on TV talking about these topics or heard me on your commute home on the radio or a podcast. Or maybe you’ve just seen my Bernie meme

I strive to explain topics that you might come across in the news but not fully understand, such as NFTs and meme stocks. I’ve had the pleasure of talking tech with Jeff Goldblum, Ang Lee, and other celebrities who have brought a different perspective to it. I put great care into writing gift guides and am always touched by the notes I get from people who’ve used them to choose presents that have been well-received. Though I love that I get to write about the tech industry every day, it’s touched by gender, racial, and socioeconomic inequality and I try to bring these topics to light.

Outside of PCMag, I write fiction, poetry, humor, and essays on culture.
