At least a dozen seniors are without a home after a two-alarm fire at a nursing home in Port Chester.
The Port Chester Fire Department responded to the blaze at Kingsport Housing for the Elderly, along with at least seven other departments, just before 12 p.m. Tuesday.
Fire officials say mutual aid helped to evacuate all the elderly residents into buses the county provided to keep them warm.
"I never saw the smoke and a fireman was coming up on the eighth floor, banging on the doors telling everyone to get out. I knew there was something – so I put my cat in the cat carrier and I left," says resident Nancy Skolas. "I've never been in a situation like this.”
