(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — With COVID-19 cases rising, Gov. JB Pritzker is leaning into encouragement instead of punitive measures as the way to get more people vaccinated.

New York’s mayor is moving ahead with a private-sector vaccine requirement, but Pritzker on Tuesday said his administration is not pursuing such a plan.

He’s taking the same wary stance toward a proposal in Springfield to require unvaccinated residents to pay for their medical care if they contract COVID.

Pritzker said he’s working with hospitals to try to keep as many ICU beds open as possible.

“I’m more interested in carrots than sticks here. From my perspective, we want everyone to get vaccinated. We certainly don’t want to penalize people.”

There are questions about the legality of the bill from state Rep. Jonathan Carroll, D-Northbrook.

State health officials on Tuesday reported 78 additional deaths attributed to COVID-19 — a number not seen since February.
