Buffalo weather blasts books and the Bills, one bettor makes nearly $10,000 off $3 bet

Bad weather, bad moods and awful wind created rare conditions Monday night, when the New England Patriots ran the ball on 46 of 49 plays to remain atop the AFC East by defeating the host Buffalo Bills.

In a frightful scene fueled by 50 mph jet stream winds, the Patriots’ 14-10 triumphant outcome wasn’t sealed until a fourth-down pass by Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen was knocked down inside the red zone by defensive back Myles Bryant.

That brought incredible joy to a swarm of Tipico Sportsbook bettors who rushed to bet the game’s under points total, which dipped to 40 as pre-game social media posts arrived revealing the severity of the blustery lake-effect conditions.

After Allen’s final pass, New England quarterback Mac Jones ran out the clock and lifted an Arizona bettor at WynnBET to a remarkable victory on a 13-leg parlay that included New England winning the game straight up as a money line wager.

Off a $3 bet, confronting 3,200-to-1 odds, the individual collected $9,609.01 on the wager. Over three days of action, the bettor also included the Detroit Lions’ first win of the season, underdog road victories by Charlotte and Houston in the NBA and the Washington Football Team’s come-from-behind triumph at Las Vegas.

The game was indeed an outlier, and at Tipico, spokesman Sunny Gupta said the book was hit hard by those who bet the under.

As we reported last week, under bets have posted a winning record this season, and by adding the vicious weather into a clash between a Bill Belichick-coached division leader and the NFL’s best defense in points and yards allowed, the offer proved a gold mine to many.

“This was certainly a bettor-friendly game," Gupta said. "This was our worst Monday Night Football game to date."

He explained Tipico’s computer models “were unable to account for the huge advantage/disparity that each team had when driving with the wind at their back versus driving against the wind.”

“We had several bettors—sharp and not sharp—betting the under and the team totals as a result,” Gupta said.

The Patriots’ mercilessly chewed up the clock, gaining 222 yards on the ground, leaving Bills coach Sean McDermott and some of his defenders upset with reporters who asked them about the results afterward.

“With all due respect, it’s not a Bill Belichick-type thing,” McDermott said. “It’s what are you doing with the opportunities you got? We turned the ball over at the plus 30-something yard line. It’s sloppy football. So, I’m very comfortable in that situation.”

Surprisingly, at Caesars Sportsbook, spokesman Jim Carr said most pre-Monday bettors were on the game’s over.

“Under was a big winner for us,” Carr said.

It might have been bigger, but Monday morning/afternoon “unders” bettors at Caesars sent the total shrinking dramatically from 46 to 40.

There was a similar story at BetMGM, said Director of Trading Jeff Stoneback, with one exception.

BetMGM had set Jones’ over/under passing yards total at 188.5.

On the two completions, he finished with 19 yards.
