From the arrival of the first parade entry to the final farewell to Santa Claus, the Christmas spirit was alive in the downtown area during Thursday’s Lighting of Metter ceremony. After enjoying the parade, the crowd turned to the park, where the lights were officially turned to the “On” position. The Metter High Band and dancers from Studio South Dance Academy entertained the audience, and attendees had a chance to visit the downtown merchants and to browse the vendor booths set up in the park.
Of course, no Christmas celebration is complete without a visit from the Jolly Ol’ Elf himself, and Santa was escorted into town in traditional Metter fashion -- on a fire truck! He spent the evening visiting with the townsfolk and getting Christmas wish lists from youngsters.
Thursday was also a day for winners. Winning floats in the parade were Living Waters Church of God (pictured above), 1st place; Candler County Historical Society, 2nd place and Restoration Worship Center, 3rd place. Golf cart winners were The Averitt Family, 1st place, and Metter Insurance Agency, 2nd place.
The annual Communities in Schools Chili Cook Off was also held, and Pineland Telephone won the Cook Off and was awarded for Best Decorated Booth. Inset: Accepting the award from CIS Director Roberta Graham (c) are Amanda Vernon (l) and Mandi Cisneros (r).
