South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem is headed to McLean, Virginia, a ritzy suburb of Washington, D.C., to raise money for her federal political action committee.
The Republican chief executive, mentioned as a possible 2024 contender, is running for a second term as governor in next year’s midterm elections, and her renomination is being challenged in the primary. Wednesday’s fundraiser is benefiting Noem Victory, a PAC the governor launched in the spring, presumably to support other Republicans running for office in 2022, activity that could help her collect friends and allies for a White House bid.

But Noem Victory is tied to her reelection campaign through a joint fundraising committee. That means the money the governor raises this week in northern Virginia also stands to boost her more immediate political concern — winning reelection.
According to a copy of the invitation, the evening event in McLean is being hosted by Republicans Kenneth J. Nunnenkamp and Giovanna Cinelli, both attorneys who typically contribute to Old Dominion Republicans. For $2,500 ($4,500 per couple,) donors have access to a “V.I.P. roundtable.” Getting in the door costs $1,000 ($1,500 per couple.) The fundraiser is being advertised by the Northern Virginia Republican Business Forum.
Noem turned into something of a conservative folk hero during the 2020 election cycle as she traveled the country campaigning for then-President Donald Trump, while back home, she refused to implement restrictions on businesses or social gatherings in response to the coronavirus.

Should Noem win reelection, she would be positioned to mount a campaign for the GOP presidential nomination.
The voting is expected to begin in neighboring Iowa, with the traditional caucuses, a potential advantage for the small-state governor. Indeed, Noem headed to Des Moines in July to speak to an influential conservative group.
