Jaelan Phillips nominated for Rookie of the Week for second straight week

The Miami Dolphins defeated the New York Giants 20-9 on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium to move to 6-7 on the season.

A big reason for the team’s recent success has been great performances from young guys like Jaelan Phillips. In the week prior, Phillips put up three sacks and a batted pass to earn his first nomination for the NFL’s Rookie of the Week honor. Now, after adding another two sacks against the Giants, Phillips has been nominated for a second straight week.

The former Miami Hurricane has some tough competition for the honor this week, as he will have to beat out New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson, Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams, Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris, Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs.

Phillips leads Miami in sacks this season with 8.5, which actually broke the Dolphins franchise record for sacks by a rookie of eight sacks set by Bill Stanfill back in 1969.

Jaylen Waddle still holds bragging rights over Phillips, as he’s been nominated four times this season, but the linebacker still has time to catch up.
