Rep. Dan Crenshaw slams members of Freedom Caucus as ‘grifters in our midst’

Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw slammed members of his own party during an event over the weekend, calling members of the Republican Freedom Caucus “grifters in our midst” and “performance artists.”

Crenshaw did not refer to any of the caucus’s members by name during his speech, instead calling out “everybody.”

“We have grifters in our midst,” Crenshaw said in a video clip from the event. “I mean in the conservative movement. Lie after lie after lie because they know something psychologically about the conservative heart — we’re worried about what people are going to do to us, what they’re going to infringe upon us.”

“They’re the ones you think are more conservative because they know how to say slogans real well,” Crenshaw said. “They know how to recite the lines that they know our voters want to hear.”

The Freedom Caucus is a group of Republican members in the House of Representatives, including Reps. Matt Gaetz from Florida, Lauren Boebert from Colorado, Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, and Texas Reps. Louie Gohmert, Chip Roy, Randy Weber, and Michael Cloud.

Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL, has criticized members of his party before, including several who supported or defended the Jan. 6 riot.

“All of the members who called for everyone to come and fight and make their last stand, all of those members were scattered like cowards while the Capitol Police had to do the fighting,” Crenshaw said earlier this year, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Freedom Caucus members have a history of being more aggressive against members of their own party, calling for the expulsion of Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois from the House Republican Conference in July after the two Republicans voiced support for a committee investigating the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol.
