A Fitchburg High School alumnus who gained national attention for giving away her $40,000 scholarship received a car during an appearance on television personality and comedian Steve Harvey's talk show that aired in November.

Verda Annan appeared on Harvey's show, "Steve," to talk about her decision to announce during Fitchburg High School's June 4 graduation that she would be giving away the scholarship she was awarded. Annan, who went by Verda Tetteh at the time, had received a full ride to Harvard University.

During the appearance, Harvey said that the Watar family, owners of the Southern California-based Trophy Automotive Dealer Group, would be giving Annan a 2021 Kia Niro electric vehicle. Annan said prior to the reveal that she had just started driving days before the interview.

"You're story really resonated with them so the Watar family sends you their best and hope that this small gift carries you to some of the greatest destinations in your life," Harvey told Annan.

Four members of Fitchburg High's Class of 2021 will split the scholarship. Each student will receive $2,500 a year for four years. An anonymous donor also matched the scholarship money, meaning that each student will also receive an additional $10,000 over four years.
