The Texas football program may reportedly give “first-round draft pick-level NIL money” if Quinn Ewers decides to transfer to the Longhorns.

While Texas football fans should like their chances about landing Quinn Ewers in the transfer portal, it may have more to do with money than anything.

NIL money was a big reason why the former top quarterback prospect of the 2022 recruiting class reclassified and enrolled at Ohio State a full year early. After a semester in Columbus, Ewers hit the transfer portal with all four years of eligibility intact. Though the Southland, Texas native could do very well in Austin, using NIL money like a recruiting weapon cannot sit well with some fans.

In a free-market economy, go get whatever you can get, but this right here is a downside to NIL.

Texas football may offer Quinn Ewers millions in NIL money to land him

For all intents and purposes, Ewers should be playing at Texas anyway. The best quarterback in The Lone Star State in his year should go to Austin to play his college football, all things equal. However, Texas has been nothing short of a tire fire for over a decade now. If this is truly pay-to-play, then college football will look more like the NFL in a matter of years due to true free agency.

Could Ewers return Texas football to glory? No doubt, as he was that talented coming out of high school. However, money does not buy happiness, and it sure doesn’t buy wins. If Texas does get Ewers, then that’s good for the Longhorns and head coach Steve Sarkisian. With that in mind, landing Ewers in the transfer portal signifies Arch Manning is no longer in consideration for 2023.

It takes what it takes, as the only thing that matters in college football is the results on the field.
