IHSAA football: Andrean junior Drayk Bowen named Gatorade Indiana Player of Year

Andrean junior Drayk Bowen is the Gatorade Indiana Football Player of the Year.

The 6-2, 215-pound Bowen, a Notre Dame commit, led the 59ers to a Class 2A state football championship last month at Lucas Oil Stadium with a 21-9 victory over Evansville Mater Dei. Bowen recorded 105 tackles, three sacks and three interceptions at linebacker and rushed for 965 yards and 18 touchdowns at running back, including 171 yards and three scores in the state championship game.

The annual award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Bowen, who maintains a 4.11 grade-point average and is also a standout baseball player, is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award, which will be announced later in December.

Recent winners in the state for the Gatorade award were Center Grove’s Carson Steele (2020), New Palestine’s Charlie Spegal (2019), Warren Central’s David Bell (2018) and Decatur Central’s Tyrone Tracy (2017).
