Custom camera technology developed for the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas is now going out of this world.
Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp. announced Tuesday that it's received a research award to develop and test its ultra-high fidelity, ultra-high-resolution camera system.
MSG Entertainment says it's planning to conduct three missions over the next several years, including sending camera equipment to and from the International Space Station.
The goal is to use microgravity conditions on the ISS and the harsh environment of space to develop a custom camera system that can capture Earth at a level of detail never seen before, and could potentially be used deeper in space.
"With MSG Sphere, we are creating an entirely new platform for immersive experiences – which requires developing our own content creation tools," David Dibble, CEO of MSG Ventures, said in a press release. "This includes camera and lens technology capable of producing ultra-high-resolution images – and there is no better setting to explore this advanced technology than the awe-inspiring perspective of space."
The MSG Sphere in Las Vegas is under construction and expected to open in 2023.
