It took a walk-off field goal for the Columbus Community football team to upend Louisa-Muscatine earlier this fall and those same fireworks were back on the basketball court this past week. On Friday the Wildcat boys’ broke their Louisa County rival’s hearts once again when a Grant Watson buzzer beating three lifted the blue and white to a 53-50 double overtime victory over the Falcons (0-2).

Trailing 24-15 at the break, the Wildcats utilized a big third quarter outscoring the Falcons 18-4 to help set up overtime tied at 43-43. Both squads scored five points in the first extra period. Only two points were scored by either team in the first three and a half minutes of the second overtime when Watson decided to call game as time expired. Head Coach Miguel Villagrana tells KCII Sports the heroic act was on a broken play. “We took a timeout to set up a play. It did not work at all, but credit to our team they kept their composure. Marco Martinez found Grant who was able to create enough separation to get the three off. Whenever he shoots you know there is a good chance of it going in and that is exactly what happened.”

Watson finished with a game-high 21 points with a trio of threes and the junior brought in six rebounds. Marco Martinez had 10 points and Tim Hills-Carrier forced five steals. Columbus out rebounded their opponent 36-25.

The Wildcat girls struggled to find any offense in a 49-13 loss. Lily Coil managed five points and Aracely Garza hauled in six boards.

The boys improve to 1-1 and the girls drop to 1-4. They both get back on the court tonight against WACO.
