While lifting weights has historically been viewed as an activity solely for men, it has surged in popularity over the past few years amongst women. And with good reason – the rumours were not true: contrary to popular belief, weight-based workouts (or resistance training as they are otherwise known), do not lead to muscles like Popeye’s, nor do they transform a once feminine shape into a hench version of its former self. Instead, they offer countless benefits. And if you need proof? Let Victoria Beckham provide it for you.

In an Instagram Story posted on Monday, the ultra-toned designer could be seen performing a barbell back squat with a substantial weight held above her head. Joking that she was trying to keep up with her husband David (though we’d argue that David is the one who should be impressed), she tagged performance coach Bobby Rich, who she trains with, on the post.

Not only is weightlifting a great exercise for maintaining (or achieving) a healthy weight, its other benefits are numerous. It aids sleep, boosts energy, and increases muscle mass and bone density; the latter is particularly important for women as they reach menopause, when osteoporosis can become an issue. Myriad scientific studies also confirm its benefits for body and mind – it has been shown to improve confidence and body image, and reduce stress.

So, while you might have had Beckham down as purely a Pilates girl, she actually mixes it up with a hefty dose of lifting, pulling and pressing weights, too. Why not try it next time you hit the gym?
