A Bridgeport non-profit says the holidays are a difficult time for some vulnerable groups of people, especially those recovering from substance abuse and addiction.
Holiday parties can be a trigger period for those recovering from substance abuse.
A local nonprofit wants to make sure people prone to substance abuse stay on track while celebrating, so it released the tips ahead of the holiday season this year.
Staff at The Hub on Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport say it's important for those recovering from substance abuse to check in with themselves and only commit to what they can manage.
The nonprofit has released tips ahead of the holiday season this year.
Tips include having a pre-planned response like, "I'm not drinking tonight" or "Yes, I'd love a drink. Can I have a water with lemon?"
The nonprofit recommends bringing a friend who understands your situation and who can help hold you accountable.
Other tips include having a pre-planned exit strategy if you become overwhelmed.
The Hub is the state-designated Regional Behavioral Health Action Organization for southwestern Connecticut.
It serves 14 communities from Greenwich to the greater Bridgeport area.
