CHARLOTTE — Police are investigating a deadly crash that had a busy road blocked for hours late Monday in south Charlotte.

The wreck happened around 10:30 p.m. along Pineville-Matthews Road near Windswept Drive.

Investigators said Altieri was heading northeast on Pineville-Matthews Road when the Ford veered to the left and onto the median before hitting a tree. Police said Altieri was not wearing a seatbelt.

When officers arrived, they found a badly damaged Ford Focus on fire in the median.

The driver, 26-year-old Jonathan Altieri, was thrown from the car during the crash and was found lying on the ground nearby, police said. He died at the scene, according to MEDIC.

Detectives said they believe speed and alcohol impairment were contributing factors in the crash.

The investigation into the wreck is active and ongoing.
