Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral not selected as Heisman Trophy finalist

OXFORD — Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral was not selected as one of the four finalists for the 2021 Heisman Trophy on Monday night.

Corral threw for 3,339 yards and 20 touchdowns with four interceptions and ran for 597 yards and 11 touchdowns, leading No. 8 Ole Miss to a 10-2 record and a Sugar Bowl berth, its first New Year's Six appearance since 2016. He was not selected as a finalist over Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett and Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson.

Corral was the winner of the Conerly Trophy, given to the top player in Mississippi, and is a finalist for the Manning Award and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, two trophies given to the nation's top quarterback. He was not named a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award, another trophy given to the nation's top quarterback, passed over for that trophy in favor of Young, Stroud and Pickett as well.

A redshirt junior from Ventura, California, Corral played through Ole Miss' final six games with an ankle injury, limiting his mobility and rushing production. Despite this, Ole Miss still went 5-1 in those games and Corral finished as the only FBS quarterback to throw for more than 3,000 yards and rush for more than 500 yards. Only seven Power 5 quarterbacks averaged more total yards per game than Corral's 328.

Corral has said he intends to play in the Sugar Bowl if he's healthy. Ole Miss plays No. 6 Baylor (11-2, 7-2 Big 12) on Jan. 1 at 7:45 p.m. CT on ESPN.
