Sources say the victim killed in the road rage shooting was able to give information to dispatch before falling unconscious behind the wheel.

Sources tell FOX40 the California Highway Patrol has made an arrest after a driver was found shot on I-5 and later died.

An official with the California Highway Patrol confirmed the victim in Monday afternoon’s shooting has died.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) — The California Highway Patrol said emergency responders were on Interstate 5 in downtown Sacramento Monday afternoon after a shooting victim was found.

Mark Leavitt, with the CHP, said a road rage incident started shortly after 2 p.m. between the occupants of a white Mercedes Benz and a maroon Dodge Ram in the area of Watt Avenue and Interstate 80.

At one point, Leavitt said shots were fired from the Mercedes, hitting the driver of the pickup truck.

Jose Vargas was in his car in the parking lot of a motel directly across the street from the southbound lanes of I-5, near Richards Boulevard, when he heard gunfire.

“I heard bang, bang, bang, like rapid shooting, like five, six shots,” Vargas recalled. 

The shooting victim was no longer able to drive and drifted to the side of the freeway, where he was found by emergency responders. FOX40 obtained images from the I-5 scene that show the pickup truck with a shattered driver’s side window.

The pickup truck driver was hospitalized, but his condition is unknown.

Officials are still looking for the shooter and could not provide any details about their identity.

“We’re looking for a white Mercedes Benz. Unknown model at this time. We don’t have a license plate either. If you have any information, please call 911,” Leavitt said.

Caltrans reported at the time that southbound I-5 from Interstate 80 to Richards Boulevard was closed. By 7:30 p.m. all ramps had reopened.

Drivers, however, should still expect heavy traffic.
