Anthony Poindexter to be the next head coach at UVA, reports say
Reports indicate Penn State Football’s safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter is set to become the next head coach at the University of Virginia
According to Jerry Ratcliffe who covers Virginia sports for JerryRatcliffe.com, it is imminent that Penn State Football’s Anthony Poindexter will be the next head football coach at the University of Virginia.
Poindexter was hired last offseason and served as Penn State Football’s safeties and co-defensive coordinator in 2021.
He has been rumored to be atop Virginia’s board since Bronco Mendenhall stepped down as the team’s head coach, and he would seemingly make a lot of sense for the Cavaliers. Poindexter is a UVA alum and was a two-time first-team All-American safety, selected as the 1998 ACC Defensive Player of the Year. He was even elected to the college football hall of fame in 2020.

The UVA alum also spent 11 seasons on the Cavaliers coaching staff where he originally coached running backs and special teams before becoming the team’s safeties coach for the final five years.
Before coming to Happy Valley, Poindexter spent four years with Purdue as the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.
This is a big loss for the Nittany Lions, who felt Poindexter’s impact in 2021, as safeties Jaquan Brisker and Ji’Ayir Brown were one of the best safety combinations in the country this season, as both took huge steps forward under Poindexter.
Poindexter would join Charles Huff, Ricky Rahne, Brent Pry and Joe Moorehead as former James Franklin assistants who will be head coaches in 2022.
