Man arrested in connection with deadly road rage shooting on I-5, CHP says
A man was arrested in connection with the deadly road rage shooting on Interstate 5 that killed one person and shut down the roadway for several hours, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
David Perry, 33, of Sacramento, was arrested in connection with the shooting and booked into the Sacramento County Jail, CHP said.
According to CHP, the situation began around 2:15 p.m. on Interstate 80 at Watt Avenue, nearly 10 miles away from the shooting scene. That is when officers started getting calls from people about it.
The road rage continued to I-5 near Richards Boulevard, where a man driving a maroon truck was shot, CHP said. That person, identified by the coroner's office as 60-year-old Lufino Reyes Mejorado, was sent to the hospital and died a short time later, officials said.
CHP said they closed I-5 at Interstate 80 so investigators could canvass the area where the shooting happened. Lanes have since reopened.
Officers are now searching for the other person involved in the road rage, who is believed to be driving a white Mercedes sedan, but the model and license plate number are unknown.
Anyone with information on the shooting or the road rage is asked to call CHP.
Dispatch calls obtained by KCRA 3 reveal the victim was shot in the arm and was given CPR on scene.
Matt Ritchie works across from where the road rage shooting occurred. He said he first heard gunshots after 2 p.m.
“Then a few minutes later I was walking across the parking lot and heard two more,” he told KCRA 3. “I look up and saw the car driving away from the truck.”
He described that car as a white four-door vehicle.
After he heard the multiple gunshots, he helped his building go into lockdown until police said it was safe to open back up.
“It’s kinda scary,” Ritchie said. “It’s a really aggressive act. Somebody like that needs to be brought to justice.”
