Wrestlers go 7-2 in Yellow Jacket Duals

Traveling to Hazlehurst last Friday and Saturday, the SCHS Gamecock wrestlers of Griffen Greene put together a 7-2 record to claim a fifth place finish from among the 24 teams participating in the 15th annual Jeff Davis High School Yellow Jacket Duals Tournament. The Red and White improved to 16-6 in duals matches.

Upcoming is the Coastal Clash, a traditional tournament, at Hilton Head SC High School on December 10-11. Their final tournament before Christmas will be the Gorilla Warfare VIII Tournament (also a traditional tournament) at Berkmar High School in Lilburn (Gwinnett County) on December 17-18.

The Jeff Davis tournament featured pools with SCHS seeded first in Pool A. The Red and White defeated Coffee 54-28, New Hampstead 60-19, Jones County 42-36, fell to Dade County 46-33, and defeated Treutlen County 78-6. In a cross over match they defeated Bacon County 72-12. In the Gold Bracket finals the team fell to AAAAAA Brunswick 63-12 before defeating Dodge County 54-27, and Effingham County 48-36. The latter match was for fifth and sixth place.

Brunswick and Dade County finished the tournament one and two with Ware County third and Vidalia fourth. Dodge County was sixth and Toombs County was seventh. None of the Gold Bracket finishers (places 1-8) were Class A save for SCHS.

Carson Ellis led the way for SCHS at 8-1 (7-1 at 152 and 1-0 at 160) while Luke McFarland (220), Timothy Frank (145), and Vasquez Lonon (182 and 170) were each 7-2. Lynnlie Rountree (106 and 113) was 6-1. Hayden Skinner (132) and David McFarland (152 and 160) were each 6-3. Justin Pearce (120), Ryder Rankin (138), and Ed Lee (195) finished at 5-4 each. Jemiah Stewart (285), Sam Robbins (126), and Bella Maust (106 and 113) each finished the weekend at 4-5. Jason Zheng (170) was 1-1 and Ben Ross (182) had five matches.

Lonon, Ellis, and Frank had six pins each, Luke McFarland and Rankin five each, Stewart and David McFarland four each, Skinner three, with Lee, Pearce, and Maust having one each.

In their final home match until the Area Traditional Tournament on January 29 on December 1 SCHS defeated first year ECI 78-6 and fell to Effingham County 48-36. Interestingly the Gamecocks turned around and defeated the Rebels 48-36 in Hazlehurst. Frank, Ellis, the McFarlands, and Stewart had two pins each while Zheng, Lonon, Maust, Pearce, Zach Smith, and Rankin had one each.
