16-year-old charged with stealing car, slamming it into Jersey City police cruiser

A 16-year-old boy stole a car from West Side Avenue in Jersey City and then slammed into a police cruiser that attempted to pull over the vehicle Sunday night, authorities said.

The teen and five girl passengers were taken into custody after the crash on Boyd Avenue, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said. The driver was charged with theft by unlawful taking, aggravated assault, eluding and resisting arrest by flight. The girls were cited for joyriding.

The 2008 Honda Civic was reported stolen at 6:32 p.m. and at 7 p.m. police located the car and attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop. The 16-year-old accelerated, striking the rear bumper of the police vehicle before fleeing the scene.

The car was located shortly thereafter when officers saw the driver had crashed into a parked vehicle along Boyd Avenue. The 16-year-old driver attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended.
