It is the first spinoff of Law & Order and stars Mariska Hargitay as Captain Olivia Benson, the commanding officer of the Special Victims Unit in a fictionalized version of the New York City Police Department. The series delves into the dark side of the NYC underworld as the detectives investigate and prosecute various s—ally oriented c—es, all the while trying to balance the effects of the investigation on their own lives as they try not to let the dark side of these c—es affect them. The series often uses stories that are “ripped from the headlines” or based on real c—es that have received media attention.
