Alain Vigneault’s second stint in the Metro went far worse than his first.
The Flyers fired Vigneault as their head coach Monday morning amid an eight-game losing streak which hit a nadir Sunday night in a 7-1 loss to the Lightning. Assistant coach Michel Therrien was also fired. Mike Yeo, the former Wild and Blues head coach, will be the interim head coach for the Flyers, who are 8-10-4 and in second to last place in the Metropolitan Division.
Vigneault, 60, joined the Flyers in April of 2019, a year after he was fired by the Rangers. Philadelphia reached the second round of the bubble playoffs in Vigneault’s first season, falling to the Islanders in seven games, before missing the playoffs during the truncated 56-game 2020-21 campaign.
Vigneault’s five-year run on Broadway began with a Stanley Cup Final appearance and was followed by reaching Game 7 of the conference final after leading the Rangers to the Presidents’ Cup Trophy during the 2014-15 season.
The Rangers under Vigneault then lost embarrassingly to the Penguins in the first round of the 2016 playoffs before falling to the Senators in the second round the year after. Vigneault missed the playoffs in 2017-18 when the Rangers announced in a midseason letter they were rebuilding the club.
