MUSKEGON, MI – Schools in Grand Haven and Fruitport Township have closed Monday, Dec. 6, because of online threats following the Nov. 30 shootings at Oxford High School.
Grand Haven Area Public Schools and Fruitport Community Schools announced closings while others, including Mona Shores and Orchard View, will remain open with heightened police presence.
The Oxford shootings, which killed four students, have led to scores of “copycat” threats across the state.

Grand Haven schools are closing “out of an abundance of caution” after threats circulated on SnapChat.
Jason Kennedy, superintendent at Fruitport, said that police are investigating a threat.
“We are hopeful that the threat will be resolved, or cleared very soon. Please know that this is not an easy decision to make; however, the threat has not been cleared yet, and the District will not compromise the safety and well-being of our students and staff,” Kennedy said in a note to parents.
Bill O’Brien, superintendent of Mona Shores Public Schools, said in a letter to parents that the district became aware of an anonymous SnapChat threat that has not been deemed credible.
The school district, Norton Shores police, Muskegon County prosecutors and the FBI are investigating, he said.
“We will continue to assess the validity of the post while working to ensure the safety of our students. It is very common for copycat threats to happen after a tragic event. Copycat or not, every single one of them is investigated to the fullest,” O’Brien wrote.
He said the threat appeared to have originated from out of state.
