KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City, Missouri, police said three people were shot overnight in Westport.
Police were called to the area around 2:40 a.m. Monday.
A police captain said off-duty officers in the area heard multiple gunshots near Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. A few seconds later, a victim ran up to the officers saying he had been shot.
“They were very close by when everything unfolded,” KCPD Capt. Leslie Foreman said of the off-duty officers.
About that same time, officers were called to Archibald Avenue and Broadway Boulevard where they discovered another man who had been shot.
Both victims were transported to an area hospital.
A third male victim arrived at the hospital by private vehicle.
One of the victims, identified by KCPD as 24-year-old Ja’Braughn James, died at the hospital, the other two are reported in stable condition.
No suspect information or information on what led up to the shootings has been released at this time.
A man working at a bar said he heard between 20 and 30 gunshots.
Several windows of the Westly apartment building had bullet holes in them. Police entered the apartments to gather evidence.
Foreman said there were no reports of injuries involving anyone in the apartments.
