Posh Alexander scores career-high 23 points, Dylan Addae-Wusu posts double-double in win over Rams

QUEENS, N.Y. – Sophomores Posh Alexander and Dylan Addae-Wusu posted career-best efforts for the Red Storm on Sunday at Carnesecca Arena, leading the Red Storm to an 83-69 win over longtime local rival Fordham.

Alexander scored a career-high 23 points, going 11-for-16 from the field while also tallying five assists, four rebounds and three steals.  Addae-Wusu, his high school teammate at Our Saviour Lutheran, scored 11 points, dished out a personal-best 11 assists and matched a career-high with four steals against the team from his home borough.  The effort marked Addae-Wusu's first career double-double.

Two other Johnnies finished in double figures, as Julian Champagnie and Montez Mathis netted 16 points apiece.  Champagnie went 7-for-14 from the floor while Mathis made six of his 10 field goal tries.  Champagnie, who ranked second in the BIG EAST in scoring entering the contest, also logged eight rebounds and three steals.

Former junior college standout Esahia Nyiwe impressed in his first Division I start, tallying seven points, eight boards and three blocks in 25 minutes.

Playing against his former team, Joel Soriano registered four points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks in just eight minutes of action.

With the win, the Red Storm improved to 67-22 all-time against the Rams, including a perfect 19-0 mark at Carnesecca Arena/Alumni Hall dating back to 1962.

As a team, St. John's shot 55.7 percent from the floor and tallied 21 assists.  On the defensive end, the Red Storm came away with 12 steals, the team's second highest total of the season.

Chuba Ohams netted 20 points for Fordham while Darius Quisenberry scored all 16 of his points in the first half.  Antonio Daye Jr. also finished in double figures with 13.

St. John's got off to a strong shooting start, making its first four 3-point attempts of the night and jumping out to a 15-7 lead at the game's first media timeout.

From there, Quisenberry ignited a 15-6 run for the Rams, scoring 12 of those points and giving Fordham a 22-21 advantage with his third triple of the spurt.

St. John's responded with six straight as part of a larger 16-5 burst to move ahead by double digits for the first time, 37-27, with just under five minutes to play in the half.  Six different Johnnies scored on the run.

The Johnnies continued to push their case offensively before the break, as Alexander scored nine of the team's last 11 points to give the Red Storm a 46-33 lead at the intermission.

St. John's carried that momentum into the start of the second stanza, using a 10-2 run to move ahead by 19, its largest lead of the game, at the first media timeout of the period.

Less than a minute later with the Red Storm leading 60-41, Ohams banked in a triple to kickstart a 10-0 Ram run, cutting the St. John's lead to single digits.  The Red Storm responded quickly with a 7-0 spurt of its own to quell the Fordham threat.

The Rams battled back once again, trimming the Red Storm advantage to eight, 69-61, on a pair of Ohams free throws.  From there, St. John's scored 10 of the game's next 15 points to build the lead back to a comfortable margin.

The Red Storm will return to action on Thursday when it hosts Monmouth at Carnesecca Arena in a campus-site game of the Gotham Classic.  Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. on FS1.
