Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland has confirmed that he is playing legendary dancer Fred Astaire in a new movie.

The actor was previously stated to be playing Astaire in a GQ profile, but it was only briefly mentioned and there hadn't been any subsequent news about the casting anywhere else. But now, it's been officially confirmed by the actor himself.

Speaking to AP at a red carpet event for his third solo Spider-Man film, Holland said: "Oh, I am playing Fred Astaire. The script came in a week ago.

"I haven't read it yet, they haven't given it to me. I know that Amy Pascal has the script. She FaceTimed me earlier – I was in the bath – and we had a lovely FaceTime. But I will be playing Fred Astaire."

There you go, it's happening. We don't know what kind of movie it will be – a biopic, perhaps? – and with the actor on the press trail for Spider-Man now and the Uncharted movie in February, we're sure that it won't be filming for a few months. Once it does, however, we're bound to get more details on what it is and who else will be involved.

Astaire's career spanned over 70 years, including his on-screen partnership with Ginger Rogers in a number of Hollywood musicals.

Last year, a biopic of Astaire and Rogers was announced by Amazon Studios, with Jamie Bell and Margaret Qualley cast as the duo.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will see Holland's wall-crawling superhero come up against villains from the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spidey films thanks to some multiverse shenanigans. Appearances from both aforementioned actors have been heavily rumoured.

Meanwhile, Uncharted is a big-screen adaptation of the beloved PlayStation series, casting the actor as a globe-trotting treasure hunter in the vein of Indiana Jones.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is available now on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download. Spider-Man: No Way Home is released in UK cinemas on December 15 and in US cinemas on December 17.
