Review: RWBY Fairy Tales: The Warrior In The Woods

Overview

A young boy meets a mysterious warrior protecting his village from afar…

Our Take

Further continuing the non-linear nature of this series, This storyline is based on the 4th story taken directly from the RWBY: Fairy Tales of Remnant book. This time around we have a framing device in the form of Taiyang telling this particular story to his two daughters Ruby & Yang. As opposed to previous episodes where Ozpin narrated most of the stories.

Easily some of the fun and wholesome highlights would have to be Taiyang telling Ruby and Yang this fairy tale as kids, Ruby asking for the definition of complacent, and Tai explaining it. The story itself also works in multiple ways as a cautionary tale discouraging children to stray far alone, or relying too much on others to save them. Yet, it also works as an inspiring tale to help others in any way you can.

This was a bittersweet yet inspiring tale of the series to date due to the nature of who the mysterious warrior is and how they fit within RWBY’s lore as it’s tied with a particular myth that was sort of touched upon in Season 3 and 6 regarding the silver-eyed warriors. It’s also the very type of story that motivates future hunters & huntresses like the titular heroes of RWBY. It was also a decent send-off while adding a bit of RWBY lore showing us a small piece of Ruby & Yang’s childhood and how their father Tai (Burnie Burns) took care of them as a single dad. Very wholesome. The twist ending also worked in such a way that I’m left wanting more and I hope to see a Season 2 finish the rest of the book’s stories in the future.
