Woman dies, husband critically hurt in Wichita stabbing

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — An elderly woman died and her husband was critically hurt after they were stabbed Saturday in Wichita shortly after a truck was stolen and crashed into a nearby church.

Wichita Police said 36-year-old Goldy Metcalf, who was out of jail on parole, was arrested after a series of crimes Saturday morning on suspicion of first-degree murder, aggravated battery, criminal deprivation of a vehicle, criminal damage to property and other charges.

The incident began around 8 a.m. Saturday when a suspect took a pickup truck that had the keys in it while someone was loading scrap metal into it, according to the Wichita Eagle.

Police Chief Gordon Ramsay said the truck then crashed into a church on the corner of Poplar and Orme streets a few miles away and caused significant damage to the building.

Then the stabbing was reported at a home about a block east of Poplar. The suspect, who was armed with a knife, left the home and continued east.

Police arrested the man about half an hour later a couple blocks away from where the stabbing happened.

The woman who was stabbed died. The man who was injured was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but later Saturday he was stable.

Police did not immediately release the names of the victims.
