Man found dead in car crashed into power pole in Northeast Portland was shot and killed

A man found dead Sunday morning in a car that appeared to have crashed into a power pole in Northeast Portland was shot and killed, police said.

Police reported Monday that the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office had ruled the death a homicide.

Portland police located the man inside a car on the Northeast Portland Highway at Northeast 45th Avenue in the Cully Neighborhood after responding to the scene at 5:49 a.m. Sunday.

Police said they will release the man’s name after his family is notified.

The Northeast Portland Highway was closed Sunday morning between Northeast 42nd Avenue and Northeast 60th Avenue while police investigated.

The shooting marked the 79th murder in Portland in 2021. Portland has seen a record number of homicides during a startling run of gun violence this year.
