Who remembers this musical button combination: “Down, A, Down, A, Right, Down, Right, Down?” Oh, sorry! I forgot to use the modern dialect:  “R, L, R, L, Y, R, Y, R?” Those who use this melody are in for a hot time, for it is the famed “Bolero of Fire.” This handy tune is used in Ocarina of Time to warp Link into the heart of the caldera atop Death Mountain. One intrepid reddit user named zaqwa has recently released a video in which he recreated this scene. Zaqwa climbed atop Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii and played the “Bolero of Fire” on his ocarina.

It’s a good thing that zaqwa wore a red jacket. Still, it looks heated up on those rocks! The background lava flow certainly resembles Death Mountain Crater. A particular plume of light and smoke visible just below the musician’s right shoulder even reminds me of Spectacle Rock. All that’s missing is for zaqwa to disappear in a warp effect after he plays. Missed opportunities aside, it’s great to see a moment from a popular game recreated in such striking fashion.
