Wild's Marcus Foligno gets away with coming off the bench to fight Leafs forward Wayne Simmonds

Minnesota Wild forward Marcus Foligno appears to have avoided any potential supplemental discipline after hopping off the bench to fight a Toronto Maple Leafs forward on Saturday.

During the first period of a 4-3 shootout win for Minnesota, Wild forward Jordan Greenway delivered a stiff check on Leafs superstar Auston Matthews, which drew the attention of linemates Michael Bunting and Wayne Simmonds.

Just before the post-whistle scrum, Foligno had headed off the ice for a change. With Simmonds having dropped his gloves to go after Greenway, Foligno hopped back onto the ice and grabbed ahold of Simmonds and the two engaged in a brief scrap near center ice. You can see the video below.




While Foligno did leave the bench to engage in a physical altercation with Simmonds, since nobody had hopped on the ice for him when he went off for a change, the Wild were a man short on the ice when the scrum occurred. It was for this reason that the NHL elected not to discipline Foligno on Sunday.

Late in the 3rd period, with the score tied 3-3, Foligno also took a run at Leafs netminder Jack Campbell, clipping him in the head during a hard drive toward the net. It is unclear at this point as to whether or not the league will take a look at that play as well.
