Converted safety Godwin Igwebuike could see increased role for Lions with RB D’Andre Swift out

Igwebuike bounced around the league as a safety, having stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets between 2018-2019. He then landed with the short-lived XFL’s Seattle Dragons before signing a futures deal after the 2020 season in Detroit.

He was listed as a safety before making an impression during OTAs, mainly after making a move in a special teams drill, catching the eye of offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn. The rest is history, with Igwebuike’s impressive camp and preseason earning him a roster spot with the Lions as a running back.

“But it caught A. Lynn’s eye and he’s like, ‘man, you got something in you,’” Igwebuike said. “I was like, ‘yeah, I played some running back in high school, played some running back in high school, nothing crazy.’ The next day, Campbell was like ‘oh, we might give you some runs in fall camp.’ But I’m just like, ‘yeah, funny coach, whatever.’ So to see, obviously come summertime, I get that call and I’m like ‘yo, OK. This is for real, for real.’ So, I mean, hats off to them. I think I could have been on 31 other teams and been in the same drill and never had the opportunity to actually showcase myself at running back. I have so much respect for them, giving me this chance. Just trying to take advantage of it.”
