The face of madness returns in February 2022. Netflix has released the official first trailer for the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Interestingly, the upcoming movie—which is based on a story by Fede Alvarez, who was also behind the successful 2013 Evil Dead remake—is actually a direct sequel to the original movie. Still, unlike Blumhouse’s Halloween reboot, the 2022 film will not ignore all the continuity that came in between.

Instead, the movie will serve as something of a weird mixture of a continuation while still blending some of the elements that occurred in between this movie and the 1974 classic.

Producer Fede Alvarez understood that the concept might be confusing. He recently chatted with Entertainment Weekly about what fans of the franchise can anticipate from the movie.

"“Our take on it was this guy probably disappeared after everything he’s done. You know, how do you catch a guy who has a mask? Once he removes the mask and runs away, it’s very easy for him to hide somewhere. This story will pick it up many, many years after the original story. He’s been in hiding for a long, long time, trying to be a good person. These people arriving in this town are going to awaken the giant.”"

Regarding the film’s continuity, Alvarez says:

"“When I say ‘direct sequel’ I wouldn’t say it skips everything. When movies do that, sometimes it feels a bit disrespectful to all the other films. Some people love Texas Chainsaw 2. I love a lot of things about that movie — it’s so wacky and of its time. But the rest is such a mess canon-wise. I think it’s up to you to decide when and how the events of the other movies happen.”"

Texas Chainsaw Massacre release date

Fans don’t have to wait long for the film’s release. It will arrive on Netflix on February 18, 2022.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre trailer

It’s short and sweet, but the new trailer gives a taste of what to expect from the new movie. There’s a glimpse of the murder weapon of choice: the chain saw, of course, along with an eerie shot of Leatherface holding up what appears to be a freshly skinned face to wear as a mask.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre synopsis

The latest movie will be the eighth in the franchise, and it follows. The film follows a group of young adults and at least one teenager who travels to a remote town in Harlow, Texas, to create a new business venture. While there, they also cross paths with Sally Hardesty, the only survivor of the 1974 massacre who is still hellbent on taking revenge against Leatherface.

It stars Nell Hudson, Elsie Fisher, Jacob Latimore and Moe Dunford.
