NEW HAVEN, CT – First-year forward
Matthew Coronato scored twice, and junior captain
Nick Abruzzese added a goal and two assists to lead No. 17 Harvard (6-4-1, 5-2-1 ECAC Hockey) to a 5-3 win at Yale (2-7-0, 1-6-0 ECAC Hockey) on Saturday night (Dec. 4).
Sophomore goaltender
Derek Mullahy made 20 saves to earn the win in net.
After an early goal by Yale, Harvard exploded for a four-goal first period, ending a two-game scoring drought and marking the team's best opening period since Oct. 30 against Bentley.
Coronato got things started, taking a great stretch past from first-year defenseman
Christian Jimenez beating Connor Hopkins over the shoulder to make it 1-1 at 4:37.
Minutes later, Harvard scored on its first power play chance of the night on a beautiful passing play with junior forward
Nick Abruzzese tapping in diagonal seam pass from
Casey Dornbach at 8:06.
On another power play for the Crimson, sophomore
Sean Farrell scored with one second remaining on the man advantage, curling in front of the net and firing a wrist shot into the top corner at 11:14.
Dornbach closed the first period scoring for Harvard, as Abruzzese forced a turnover, found his co-captain in front for a shot that deflected off a Yale defenseman and trickled past Hopkins at 17:06.
The Bulldogs cut the Harvard lead to 4-2 at 14:39 of the second period on Cole Donhauser's goal.
Harvard killed off a Yale power play early in the third period, and kept Yale off the scoresheet until 17:05 when Brandon Tabakin scored from right in front to make it a one-goal game.
But Coronato scored his second of the night with Yale's net empty, stealing a pass and scoring from just inside the red line at 19:19.
