Alan Shearer hails the 'fantastic job' Michael Carrick did as Manchester United boss - and hits out at Roy Keane who slammed the caretaker coach for being part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team

  • Alan Shearer praised the work Carrick did in his three unbeaten games at United
  • Shearer also hit out at Roy Keane who slammed Carrick after his second match

Alan Shearer has hailed Michael Carrick for his work as Manchester United caretaker - and made a dig at Roy Keane for claiming the temporary boss was part of the problem when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was boss.

Carrick led the Red Devils to a 3-2 victory over Arsenal on Thursday to make it three games unbeaten as caretaker - before quitting the club that evening with Ralf Rangnick starting his interim role on Friday.

Keane had slammed Carrick after United's 1-1 draw with Chelsea last week after he failed to help former permanent boss Solskjaer avoid the sack - but Shearer jumped to the former caretaker boss' defence after the win over the Gunners.

Shearer told Amazon Prime Video: 'Fair play to him because there will be people who have said he was part of Ole's coaching staff.

'But being an assistant you can only give your opinion on 'no I think we should play five at the back' the manager says 'no I want to play four at the back.'

'That's fine but you then have to back your manager up and say: ok, keep it in house not let the players know in terms of him giving an opinion.

'Then he has to back the manager up in everything he says and does. He might not have agreed with what Ole was doing but he has to back him up. So he might think Ole has had to take a lot of the flack, fairly, unfairly and he might think it's right to walk away.

'But what a fantastic job and what a great guy he (Carrick) is. In the three games he's had, he's set the team up perfectly and they responded in a very good way.'

Keane had been very critical of Carrick after the former caretaker boss said he was 'proud' his players' attitude following their draw at Premier League leaders Chelsea.

'He's talking about a plan,' Keane told Sky Sports last weekend. 'He's talking of his players' efforts, he's proud of them.

'So is that just on Ole? What plans were they doing last few months before Liverpool at home, Man City and Watford? Have the plans only started this week?

'He was in the dugout with Ole and all of a sudden he's proud of them and they had a plan.

'What about all the other games they had? Why aren't they making the effort in other games? Why aren't they closing players down in other games? They're the worst in the league closing people down.'
