Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Maintains its Momentum in Victory over Erie

BUFFALO, N.Y., December 4, 2021 – After a sizable victory over Monroe Community College on Friday, the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team stayed hot on Saturday in an 87-18 victory over Erie Community College. The Mustangs improve to 3-8 overall with the win, while the Kats fall to 0-3.
 
Sara Carvajal-Caro made a layup 18 seconds into the game, and then a pair of free throws by the Kats tied it up at 2-2. The Mustangs then went on an 18-2 run to take a 20-4 edge on the Kats and never looked back. A free throw by the Kats made it a 34-8 game with 2:45 left in the first, but the Mustangs went on an 11-1 run to close out the opening frame with a 45-9 advantage.
 
The Mustangs remained comfortably in control the rest of the way. They outscored the Kats, 8-1, in the second, to go to halftime with a 53-10 lead. Monroe went on to hold a 34-8 edge in the second half to reach the 69-point victory.
 
Daja Wentz scored a season-high 22 points in the win after shooting 11-for-15 from the field. She added six rebounds, two assists and two steals as well. Naomi Barnwell picked up 17 points, seven boards, three assists and four steals in an all-around solid game. Olivia Medford registered a double-double the hard way with 13 points and an incredible 11 steals. Carvajal-Caro did it the more traditional way with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Kayla Segree matched Carvajal-Caro's 11 rebounds to tie for the team lead, adding six points and four blocks off the bench. Tanae Arnold scored seven points and dished out a team-high seven assists. Aysia Pink contributed three points, six boards, six assists and three steals. Anais Rosa also filled the stat sheet with two points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Jalissa Fatorma picked up four points and a rebound.
 
The Mustangs took advantage of their takeaways with a 44-1 differential in points off turnovers. They also dominated from in close to the tune of a 66-2 advantage in points in the paint. Monroe outrebounded its hosts, 61-39, while forcing 41 turnovers to just 14 for the Mustangs.
 
The Mustangs will look to make it a perfect weekend tomorrow, Dec. 5, when they visit Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
