Cambria County commissioners say it's been a long financial road for the county since they took office, but over the past four years, taxes in the county have gone down.
President Commissioner Tom Chernisky says the county's new budget is on display, noting a 2.5 mil budget decrease, which totals about three million dollars going into next year's budget.
He says that getting a grasp on county infrastructure and blight issues have played a role in creating a better county budget.
The county has also cut down on its borrowing.
Chernisky says the progress has been a team effort.
"This is the first year the county will not be borrowing any money. This is the first time since 1993 that the county will not do a tax anticipation note. That's good government. That's saving on interest of around $100,000. A lot of good teammates and people working together creating a winning environment and we have that momentum and we plan on keeping going forward with that momentum."
Commissioner Scott Hunt also released the following statement:
In light of the improving financial condition of the county, coupled with the millage rate currently being over the statutory limit, it is clear that we are able to present a responsible, balanced budget with a reduction of 2.5 mills. The reduction will help taxpayers, and we will continue to operate a fiscally responsible and effective county for the benefit of all.
