Netflix Turning the Accidental Thanksgiving Invite Between Grandma and Stranger Into Movie ‘The Thanksgiving Text’

Six years ago, a text message regarding Thanksgiving dinner was delivered to the wrong number, sparking an enduring connection between strangers that blossomed into an unusual friendship and a joyful holiday tradition. Netflix is now turning that inspirational story into a movie.

The Thanksgiving Text will tell the true story of Wanda Dench, who thought she was messaging her grandson to see whether he would be coming over for Thanksgiving in 2016. Apparently, she dialed the incorrect mobile phone number. Jamal Hinton, a high school student at the time, accepted her invitation regardless — and has attended her feast every year since.

The script is bring written by Abdul Williams, the writer behind the TV movie Salt-N-Pepa, TV mini-series The Bobby Brown Story, and comedy film Lottery Ticket. Netflix has yet to name a director or the cast members.

“We are excited to share our story with the world. We hope it inspires more people to reach out and make connections that they wouldn’t ordinarily make,” Dench and Hinton said in a joint statement. “We are so blessed to find a genuine friendship brought together by God from a mistaken text message.”

“We thank every single one of you for your love and support in our journey the last 6 years,” said Hinton on his Instagram account. “We can’t wait to tell our story on the big screen!”
