Silent Night ending spoilers follow.

If you thought that all Christmas movies had to end with a warm and fuzzy finale, Silent Night has arrived to challenge that notion.

The pitch-black comedy sees a group of old friends reunite for Christmas at an idyllic country home. With impending doom on the horizon, they all try to ignore their fate and have a jolly good time on their last night on Earth.

One character who rails against that notion is Art (Roman Griffin Davis) who tries to persuade his parents, Nell (Keira Knightley) and Simon (Matthew Goode) that there's another way.

And it all plays out in a dark final reveal, but before we go into it, major spoilers are ahead, so look away now if you haven't seen Silent Night yet.

Right on schedule, the toxic cloud that is killing off humanity around the globe arrives near the house. Art refuses to take the government-issued suicide pill before the cloud arrives and, against his parents' wishes, he ventures out of the house.

Art finds himself caught by one of the toxic tornados and shortly after, he dies in the arms of Nell... or so we think. After everybody else has taken their pills and died, the final moment of Silent Night sees Art wake up the next day.

Was he just somehow immune or is the toxic cloud not as deadly as feared? It's unclear, but star Annabelle Wallis – who plays Sandra in the movie – told Digital Spy that the ending has some positivity for her.

"I was excited about potentially what comes next for Roman and his character, if they're allowed to do that. I like this idea that he's not abiding by the rules. It is the generation, the new generation, that has to carry us into this next place," she explained.

"But I was definitely shocked. And I was happy. It gave me hope. It's an uncomfortable ending, but then you are left with hope and I think that hope is something very important to give audiences.

"So I love that Roman was gifted that task – unfortunately without Sandra. But you never know. You never know."

Silent Night is out now in UK cinemas and is available to watch on Altitude.film, iTunes and other digital platforms from December 6.
