West Edge Opera Announces New Venue for 2022 Summer Festival

By Logan Martell

West Edge Opera has announced that their 2022 summer festival will be held at The Scottish Rite Center in Oakland, California. The move will mark the company’s return to performances held at unconventional, historically-rich spaces.

Designed in 1927 by Carl Werner, the building was remodeled in 1939 and is located across from Lake Chalet. The venue will allow the company more seating and enable them to offer more discounted tickets to the community.

The festival is set to launch with Handel’s “Julius Ceasar” on July 23, 2022. Subsequent productions include “Ariane and Bluebeard” by Paul Dukas, and “Coraline” by Michael Anthony Turnage. The lineup will also include a preview of Nathaniel Stookey and Eisa Davis’ new opera “Bulrusher,” which is currently under commission.

“The unique ceremonial Scottish Rite architectural style, together with warm ambience, open acoustics, and clear sight-lines, perfectly suit each of our three shows for Summer of 2022,” says Music Director Jonathan Khuner. “It will feel great for singers, orchestra, and audience to be sharing a warm indoor performance space that’s both spacious and intimate.”
