LITTLE ROCK — Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System and the Department of Arkansas American Legion Auxiliary teamed up to operate the 2021 Christmas Gift Shop for Veteran patients, helping them provide gifts for their loved ones.
Prior to the pandemic, the auxiliary and CAVHS have set up in-person gift shops that allow inpatient Veterans to choose donated gift items for mailing to specific family members and caregivers. The 2020 shop was cancelled due to COVID-19 precautions, and this year’s shop was held virtually.
Traditionally, Civic Engagement (Voluntary Services), the auxiliary, Nursing, and Social Work compile information for each patient to see that their immediate family members can receive Christmas gifts at no cost to the Veteran. This year, inpatients were provided forms for gift selection and to list family members. Gifts were selected by American Legion Auxiliary members, packaged, and mailed.
An American Legion Auxiliary tradition since 1928, family members who live in the same household as the Veteran are qualified for the gift shop program. Significant others of Veterans with no family also qualify.
