George Kambosos trying to boost Teofimo Lopez’s spirits after loss

By Dan Ambrose: George Kambosos Jr. gave a message of encouragement to the beaten Teofimo Lopez to try and lift his sports following his crushing loss last Saturday night in New York.

The former undisputed lightweight champion Teofimo (16-1, 12 KOs) has seemed down in his posts on social media since suffering a disappointing 12 round split decision to the Australian Kambosos (20-0, 10 KOs) at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Kambosos says he hopes Teofimo can bounce back from his loss and can come back from it. The Australian fighter says he’s still willing to give Teofimo a rematch at some point down the road if he wishes.

On social media, Teofimo quoted German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche on suffering being part of human existence. It’s pretty deep stuff.

Hopefully, Teofimo’s loss doesn’t wreck his career because many fighters fail to bounce back after suffering their first career defeat. Kelly Pavlik and Naeem Hamed are two examples of fighters that never bounced back after losing.

Kambosos says it could happen at 140 possibly, but for the time being, he’s looking to fight a big name for his next contest in his native Australia. He thinks he can bring in 80,000 fans, an ambitious number.

It would probably be better if Kambosos stops talking about the size of the crowds that will turn out for his next fight in Australia.

But even if only 10,000 show up to watch Kambosos’ next fight, that would still be respectable, especially when compared to the type of crowds the other top lightweights are bringing in on a routine basis.

“I hope he does wherever he goes, 135 or 140,” said Kambosos to Fighthype on hoping Teofimo can come back from his loss. “There’s another battle for me there. We’ll fight again.

I’m not going to kick him while he’s down. Why would I do that for? We shed blood. We gave the fans something they hadn’t seen before. I won’t kick him while he’s down. He’ll get through it; I hope he does.

“He has the right people around him that are supporting him. On my side, it’s done. It’s all in the past now.

“There is,” said Kambosos when asked if there are similarities to how Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis fights. “He likes to fight in the pocket as well. We dissect opponents, me, and my team. Whatever style we see, we will pinpoint.

“I’ve got so many aspects in my game and so much artillery in my game. Let them [Gervonta] handle their business like I did, and it’ll come down to negotiations,” said Kambosos.

This writer doesn’t see Gervonta Davis as being anything like Teofimo Lopez, but if it makes Kambosos feel confident viewing them as being similar, more power to him.

If Kambosos does choose to fight Tank Davis next, it would be best to treat him as an entirely different fighter than Teofimo.
