PERKASIE — For the second consecutive season, Wyomissing will play for a state championship.
The Spartans defeated Neumann Goretti 42-6 in the PIAA Class 3A semifinals on Friday night at Pennridge High School. Wyomissing will play Central Valley on Dec. 11 at noon at Hersheypark Stadium in the championship game.
“This group (has) just been such a solid group,” coach Bob Wolfrum said about his team. “This was really special just because of how it started.”
The District 12 champion Saints (13-2) received the opening kickoff and put together a long scoring drive that lasted more than half of the first quarter. Running back Shawn Battle completed the drive with a touchdown, but the two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
“It didn’t look good, but we didn’t quit,” Wolfrum said. “Our defense got better and better as the game went on.”
The Spartans dominated the rest of the way, scoring 42 unanswered points.
True to form, Wyomissing controlled the line of scrimmage and utilized eight different ball carriers who collectively ran for 348 yards.
“We were able, physically and technically, to move the ball,” Wolfrum said. “We got a lot of great angle blocking done tonight.”
Running back Amory Thompson led the way for the District 3 champion Spartans (15-0) with 115 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Fellow running back Tommy Grabowski had 112 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
Wyomissing went to the air several times in the red zone, as quarterback Ben Zechman tossed two touchdowns. Zechman completed 5-of-7 passes for 62 yards.
Running back Drew Eisenhower caught a touchdown, his only reception of the game. He also ran for 71 yards and a score.
The Spartans were dominant on defense, holding Neumann-Goretti to just nine first downs.
Battle was the lone bright spot for the Saints, accumulating 88 yards and the touchdown.
Since Wolfrum began serving as the Wyomissing head coach in 1987, the Spartans never had played a playoff game in Bucks County until Friday night. A native of lower Bucks County, the game — which was held in Perkasie — meant a little extra to the veteran coach.
“It was pretty neat,” he said. “It’s just neat to get back here where I grew up.”
