MLB rumors: Ex-Mets star may talk Carlos Correa out of signing with Yankees

Well this is interesting.

If you plug that into Google Translate, here’s what you get: “Carlos Correa #cubs and #yankees are the 2 teams most likely to sign to Campo-Corto since they are the most fluid negotiations at the moment, a source confirms that Correa called Báez to ask him how is the treatment of the Chicago organization.”

The Baez that Rodriguez refers to is Javier Baez, who was traded by the Cubs to the New York Mets last season. (Baez agreed to a six-year, $140 million contract with the Detroit Tigers earlier this week.)

Carlos Correa, the former Houston Astros star, and Colorado RockiesTrevor Story are the best remaining shortstops available in free agency.

Mark Berman of FOX26 in Houston reported Wednesday that “According to MLB sources the agent for free-agent shortstop Carlos Correa has heard from the @Yankees@RedSox@Dodgers@Cubs and @Braves and was offered five years/$160 million by the Astros last month.”

On Tuesday, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden tweeted that “In terms of what’s left on the Correa watch… #Yankees #RedSox #Astros #Mariners ? #MysteryTeam

Before the start of free agency, Bowden predicted Correa would get a 10-year, $300 million contract, while ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel projected a nine-year, $297 million deal.

But after watching the Texas Rangers throw Monopoly money at Corey Seager (10 years, $325 million) and Marcus Semien (seven years, $175 million), it’s hard to see the Yankees staying in the mix for Correa.

After all, New York already has a pair of $300-million deals on the payroll (Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton) and Aaron Judge is in line for a long-term contract extension.

The more conservative (and fiscally responsible) move might be to pursue a short-term fix (i.e. Andrelton Simmons) while waiting for top prospects Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza to develop.

According to MLB PipelineVolpe is the Yankees’ No. 1 prospect, while Peraza ranks No. 3.
